However, MIT now has some podcasting plans of their own. I read on Slashdot , in an article entitled "MIT Plans to Convert Cell Phone Users Into Podcasters that MIT is trying to turn cell phone use for entertainment into an interactive "discussion-on-demand." It is a way for people who would normally call a friend when walking, for example, to participate in a podcast that is exchanged between users. It's going to work like a discussion forum, but in podasting form. It should be really interesting to see what happens, because I for one call someone every single time I am walking by myself. I would love to try this out in the future.

James Frey and His Big Fat Lie!

I was recently reading some information on Suzanne's Blog about the author James Frey and his book "A Million Little Pieces." She has been updating his article on wikipedia. I just thought I'd add in some of my own insight. I read this book, and to be honest, I thought it was great. It was just the kind of book I like: a quick and painless read. I went through it in about a week, it didn't make you think into anything, and it was fun. It was an interesting account, and although it wasn't Frey's distint experience, I'm sure it accurately reflects many other's experiences. It told the story of a drug addict and his journey to recover.

Oprah was very upset because she had been promoting his book as a true story. However, by her putting him on her show to scold him for it, I feel as though it created even more publicity! He probably sold twice the books he would have sold if it were a true account. Therefore, in my opinion...props to James Frey. Not for lying, but for being smart. It was a good book, you shouldn't have lied, but it's over and you're probably wiping away your tears with $100 dollar bills. Way to go.

Goodbye Wiki, Hello Home

This is my final blog on Wilkes-Barre. It has been my favorite wikipedia article to update, because Wilkes-Barre is my home, my life, my love.

I made my First Edit on February 21st. I added the Wyoming Valley Mall to the local attractions. This edit is still there.

I made my Second Edit on March 4th, where I changed the name Joseph Murgas (under famous residents) to "Josef Murgas," which is the Slovakian spelling. I then added the link to get to his page. This change is still there.

I made my Third Edit on March 30th. I added a sentence under "facts" that stated "Wilkes-Barre is the birthplace of Planters Peanuts Company, which was founded in 1906 by Italian Immigrant Amedo Obici and partner Mario Peruzzi. Planters celebrated its 100th birthday this year!" This fact is also still there.

And I made my Fourth Edit just yesterday, May 12th, to the local attractions part again. This was extra by mistake. I took out Kirby Park as a Wilkes-Barre attraction because it's technically in Kingston. I presume this edit will stay.

I loved editing this site, and the wikipedia community was great and nice about my edits. I'll keep checking in, and add more information while I'm home this summer!

FINAL Real World Blog!!!

This is also my final blog of The Real World on Wikipedia. I made my first edit on April 20th. I added a section in "recurring themes" about the upcoming season in Denver. This comment was removed May 2nd.

I made my Second Edit on May 3rd. This time I added in a paragraph under "criticism/ethics" about the recent controversy over casting Paula Meronek. This edit is still there!

And my Third Edit was made on May 10th. I added a paragraph under "criticism/authenticity" about how MTV potentially plays around with the material on the Real World, therefore making it "not real." This edit was deleted on May 11th under the claim that it was "nonsense." I 100% disagree with this claim, but I respect the wikipedia community's wishes.

I also made one other edit on April 12th. I added a section into "history" about how Tanya, from the real world chicago, recently took part in a show on MTV: "True Life/I'm a Reality TV Star." It's the very last sentence in the section, and it's still there!!!

I enjoyed editing this article (even though I don't know how much other people enjoyed me editing it), and I plan to actually add some new material once the new season begins.

Final Jessica Simpson Blog:

This is my FINAL Jessica Simpson blog! I made my first edit to the Jessica Simpson page on Wikipedia on April 10th. I added a section under "currently" about the recent allocations that she might be in close encounter with comedian Dane Cook since her recent divorce from Nick Lachey. However, since then, someone actually took the entire "currently" section out of the page.

I then made my Second Edit to the page on April 28th. I added "fun facts" about Jessica Simpson, which took me awhile to find. However, on April 30th it was already deleted with a comment saying "we don't need fun facts cmon this is an encyclopedia." There's a "facts" section on the Wilkes-Barre page!

Anyway, I made my Third Edit on May 2nd. I added a paragraph under "public image" about the political situation described in my blog for that date. (When she refused to take part in a Republican fundraiser in Washington). AND THIS ONE IS GOOD!!! It's still there. I'm happy they kept it.

I learned a great deal about Jessica Simpson fans...they update her page every day and are very protective of it. I'll keep an eye on it this summer to see how else it changes.

Wilkes-Barre...Haven't Heard from you in awhile...

Today I went to make my final blog on Wikipedia for Wilkes-Barre, and from what I could see I only had two edits. So while I was reading the site just to see in general what has been done to it, I realized that someone added Kirby Park into local attractions. As beautiful as Kirby Park is (it truly is...I have gone there just to take pictures), it is in Kingston, where I technically live. Kirby Park lies right on the border. If my thinking is correct (which I hope it is because this is what I have learned my entire life), once you cross the Susquehanna River you are in Wilkes-Barre. Kirby park is on the "Kingston" side of the bridge, so it therefore cannot be a local "Wilkes-Barre" attraction.
-And I kind of feel bad deleting this, because people keep deleting my facts and it bothers me.

Another Real World Edit!

I added another Wikipedia edit on the The Real World Page. I haven't actually checked but I think this might have been my fourth edit, but I forgot to sign in once. Anyway, I added a little bit of information under the Criticism Section/Authenticity, about how MTV may actually toy with the material to make it seem like certain things are happening or people feel certain emotions when really they do not. For example, on a reunion special for I think Real World Seattle, Cara, if I remember correctly, made a statement to the fact that the audience should look at their outfits while in the confessional. For example, they may show her talking about an issue on the first episode, and in the last episode show her in the same outfit-meaning, they take the confessional info and format it to fit with whatever storyline they want. Who knows if this is actually true, but there have been accusations of it. Either way, it's reality, it's entertainment, I enjoy it, and I'll keep watching. Way to go MTV.

***FINAL Reality Television Blog***

After updating the Reality Television page on Wikipedia, I am ready to report everything I did and how the Wikipedia community responded. Well...basically...they didn't like my entries. They have all been deleted or changed in some way. Which in MY opinions is pretty silly because I personally enjoyed what I had to add about the shows Cheerleader Nation, American Inventor, and Wanted!

My First Edit was about the show Cheerleader nation on "Lifetime." I put in a little paragraph in about the show underneath documentary-style reality television. However, it was deleted the same day because Korny O'Near thought it was spam.

My Second Edit was about a new show I found during my research called "American Inventor." I added it under a new section called innovations. HOWEVER, Korny O'Near took it out and moved "American Inventor" to a new location the very same day.

My Third Edit was about the show Wanted, which I put under the origins section because it was one of the first reality television shows. But, again, Korny O'Near removed it because he said it didn't fit this article's definition of reality TV.

All in all, I'm really glad my input was so accepted on the Reality Television page. He is the E-Business leader at Dupont, and gave a talk about Dupont's marketing approach, and how it has changed over the past few years. He started out by talking about how Dupont is driven by two things:
1.) Values-Based Innovation and
2.) Transparency
Marketing has changed quite a bit over the years, given that marketing tactics such as blogs and RSS feeds are used now. He stated that marketing has become just as much about "who" a company is rather than what they produce. And "who" a company is is so important because Word of Mouth Marketing can now spread like wildfire with the help of things such as blogs.

Gary Spangler actually found our class through one of my classmate's blogs who posted some information on him. It is interesting how we are all connected over the network. Could anyone have predicted 50 years ago what the world of maketing would be like today??? I wonder what it will be 50 years from right now.

One of their goals in marketing is not only to attract new customers, but to "nurture prospects." This means providing a type of digital relationship, and making them WANT more information once they come to their website. For example, if a potential customer comes to the site, they want them to download more information, search further, subscribe to an RSS feed, opt-in for email, etc. This is changed from what marketing used to be, because it used to have a great deal to do with email. Dupont does not email from long lists, especially because of the Do Not SPAM Act...they only use email as a nurturing technique.

They also try to monitor online conversations in order to make their web-based content in line with what customers want. It is a passive, but successful way to get through to people, according to Spangler. What is also great about this technique of monitoring is that you not only see what people are saying, but you can also tell if there's a net positive or negative sentiment. You can then work off of that to turn a negative into a positive or maintain a positive sentiment. It gives you a good idea of where you stand as a business.

The internet has become a conversation, rather than a means of finding information. It is interactive, and Dupont is doing a great job at responding to this. Spangler thinks that Dupont is right on task with keeping up with the latest in technology (not ahead of the game or behind). However, he also seems to think that their knowledge might be moving ahead of the game. Good luck to Dupont, and thanks to Gary Spangler for a great talk!

loocsixela loocsixela loocsixela loocsixela
loocsixela loocsixela loocsixela
loocsixela loocsixela

loocsixela
loocsixela

Reality TV Wiki Edit!

I just made another edit on the Reality Television page on Wikipedia. I added a little piece of information about the origins of reality TV that I found on this website.

Speaking of CBS, they actually aired a show "Wanted," from 1955 to 1956 that featured interviews with wanted fugitives and their families. This is similar to the show cops, which started long ago as well. But as far as reality tv in general goes, CBS is the first with the show Candid Camera. This show followed people around with cameras and watch them do silly things, and was even mocked on other shows, such as Saved by the Bell. It started in 1948 and took the TV world by storm!
Versions of Candid camera were made all over the world. It even had famous writers for it such as Woody Allen!

MTV even made a similar type of spinoff recently, where they would put "real people" in awkward situations and tape their reactions. If they stayed for a certain amount of time without walking away, they won $100. It's an interesting concept, what will they come up with next?

***loocsixela***

CBS Jumps on the Bandwagon

In a previous post from awhile back, I had written a short entry about how ABC was going to launch some of it's most popular shows over the internet. Well, as I was reading The Wall Street Journal this past weekend, there was an article about how CBS is now doing the same thing!~CBS Launches Web-TV Channel. This broadband channel has been named "Innertube," and has been created as an attempt at making new revenue. People are barely watching commercials anymore because of distractions and new devices such as TIVO, so hopefully this type of programming could help out the networks make the money they were losing.

Not only are they going to try to show reruns of current episodes, but CBS is also hoping to show reruns of old stuff, such as "I Love Lucy." Overall, according to the article, they just want to keep the shows '"edgy"' in order to gain a younger audience and keep them interested.

In order to make the revenue, they will obviously try to have internet advertising. Nothing has been agreed upon yet, but they should be able to buy "15 second commercials that CANNOT be skipped." It will be interesting to see what CBS decides, and who else will jump on the bandwagon next.

ps-***loocsixela***

What is MTV up to?

I just edited my 3rd Real World article on wikipedia. I found an article from The New York Times website entitled On MTV's 'Real World' Paula Meronek Deals with Grim Reality. I added a comment about this article to the "criticism" section under "ethics." Apparently, according to the article, some people feel as though Paula was put on the show to be exploited and bring about good story lines. And if this was MTV's purpose, it surely succeeded. Just based on last night's episode, Paula showed her true signs of emotional distress, anorexia, depression, and mood swings, all within a thirty minute time span. I feel bad, because she is going through this on national television, and who knows if MTV makes it look a certain way through their portrayal of the situation.

However, I do also feel that Paula signed on for this. She agreed to have her "life taped" and put out there for the nation to see. I also think this is a good learning ground for people who may have similar problems as hers and may have been too shy to do anything about it. Either way, we'll see what happens during the rest of the season. Good luck to Paula!

***loocsixela*** ***loocsixela*** ***loocsixela***

Jessica Simpson Wiki Edit!

I just edited the Jessica Simpson page on Wikipedia for the third time. I added a little bit of information that I found today from MSNBC.com. There was an article posted on March 16, 3006, entitled Jessica Simpson snubs President Bush. This article was about how Simpson recently decided not to attend a Republican Fundraiser when she was in Washington D.C. helping out with a different cause.

Although it is publicly known that Jessica Simpson is a Bush fan, given that she was born and raised in Texas, she apprently does not like to publicly proclaim her political views. "NRCC spokesman Carl Forti said he was surprised at Simpson's position." (from the article)

I added this information in a short paragraph in the section "Public Image" on the Wikipedia site. Lets hope that this edit stays a little longer than my previous posting about Jessica Simpson's fun facts. I'm still angry about that, because I wanted to post something interesting that most people probably didn't know. I thought that was perfect, but apparently not everyone else agreed. I'm bitter.

PS--to one of my teammates--I wanted to get in a wikipedia edit before my nap which I'm about to take. I need to get my rest because I have a long night of "American Idol," "The Real World," and "8th and Ocean" ahead of me! :)

loocsixela

Podcasting at UD???

In a recent article on UDaily, entitled UD Podcasts are a Hit, it was explained that the University of Delaware has been podcasting since December of 2005. I had no idea, but as it is picking up speed as to delivering podcasts, more people seem to be tuning in. It has been podcasting such things as lectures, big events, etc., going on around campus. People are able to access it and put it on their ipods, for example.

I am glad that they posted this article, because if they had not I would have never known that our univeristy was offering such a thing. I think it's a great idea, and even though I don't have an ipod, I'll probably tune into it and check it out. I still really want to podcast at some point, so maybe this will help motivate me. Maybe now the University of Delaware can give out free ipods next year, like the students at Duke were given. Hmmm, maybe i'll bring that up at the Roundtable tomorrow night.

ps- loocsixela

Reality TV Wiki Edit!!!

I just edited another Wikipedia article on Reality Television. I added another section under "hoaxes" called "innovation." I added a little information abut the new show on Fox called "American Inventor," and the new show possibly coming about run by Ford Motor, Co. I found this information on the MSNBC website.

This show is based around people meeting with Ford design teams to help create a new car. I think that this goes hand in hand with a great deal of the stuff we have been talking about in class this semester. For example, blogging is the process that GM takes to make the customer/design staff more two-way (interactive). I feel as though this is a step similar to blogging, by getting the public involved in the design process of the cars, and then televising it to create demand. I think, as being a marketing major, that this show would be a big hit. I hope that it airs, and if it does, I look forward to watching it.

ps- loocsixela

Jessica Simpson Wiki Edit 2

I just edited my second wikipedia article on Jessica Simpson. I looked up her name on google to see what information I could find, and there was a really great site in the search results entitled SweetKisses.net. It had some really interesting facts about Jessica Simpson, and I thought that it would be really fun to add them to the Wikipedia site. So I created a new category called "Fun Facts" at the very bottom, and I added a few little things about her...

-Her favorite restaurant is Outback Steak House.
-Her favorite actor is Brad Pitt.
-Her favorite actress is Julia Roberts.
-Her first job was babysitting.
-Her favorite subject in school was English.

Even though this information isn't especially important, it's something fun for her fans to read if they didn't know the information already. I didn't think I had anything in common with her, but Julia Roberts is my favorite actress as well, and my first job was also babysitting. This makes me like her even more now!

ps-loocsixela. I found this information because I subscribed to search output on google based on The Real World-blog. When reading it this morning, there was a new posting that the upcoming season will be located in Denver, Colorado. How exciting! There's not much to say because nothing has happened yet. They just started building the house, which is apparently going to have a basketball court in it!? I added a bit of information about the new "Lifetime" series called "Cheerleader Nation." It aired March 12th, and it follows a high school cheerleading team on their journey through practices, competitions, and bonding. I am a big fan of the show because I was a cheerleader in high school. It brings back fond memories for me when I watch it, and it makes me happy.

What I also found interesting was that on the Lifetime webpage for Cheerleader Nation, they offer PODCASTING. There's no escaping it anymore! Rather than beat them, join em'! The posting was basically about the new Xbox he was given from his friend for being the best man at his wedding. It makes sense, since the Xbox is a Microsoft product. To be honest, though, I have never played it and I don't know much about it. However, my sister advertises for them (Microsoft Xbox), so through her, I get to see a whole other side of it!

My sister works for Mccann Erikson Advertising Agency, where she buys time from networks for her advertisements. Therefore, anything I learn about Xbox and it's games, I learn about through her, and babysitting, of course. It seems to be a really interesting product which has really taken off, and looking to go even further in the coming times. I hope that Scoble enjoys his new toy, I know I probably would. However, I cannot get something like that, because I barely have enough time as it is, and I tned to get addicted to video games like that. hmmm...maybe I'll look to invest in one this summer.

ps- loocsixela

WOW: loocsixela

On a previous post, I wrote about my edit of the Wikipedia site on Reality Television.
I added a few sentences about my favorite realitivy tv hoax, the Average Joe. I read on Slashdot.com, under an article entitled Free Net TV Threatens Telecoms and Cable, that Walt Disney-owned ABC is going to start releasing some of it's shows for free on it's website the day after they're aired. This is a way for viewers, who happen to miss the show, to catch up since there are no repeats. Shows that will be involved in this include Desperate "Houswives," "Lost," "Alias," and "Commander-in-Chief." NBC and CBS will soon jump on the bandwagon as well.

This doesn't mean that in a month everyone will be watching TV over the internet. There are still people, like my dad, who don't have broadband access, which would make watching a show unenjoyable in my opinion. Also, because of streaming media, as presented in the article, the picture may sometimes be choppy and difficult to watch as well. There are still innovations that need to occur, but ABC is going to test this for about 2 months, just to see how it is accepted by the public. After the test-run, we'll have a better idea of where the future of television lies. As for me, I am not that interested because I have an old computer as well as Tivo. However, my new computer that I'm getting this summer, a Sony, has a cable cord that can plug right into it. This in itself is interesting, so once I have a fast and new computer, I may be more willing to at least try it out. Our network sure is being expanded rapidly!

ps- loocsixela

"The Real World" Wikipedia edit

Today I made a Wikipedia edit on The Real World, which is a reality TV show on MTV. It's purpose it to put 7 strangers in a house together (no TV, radio, etc.), and their entire lives are taped for about three months. The producers purposely choose people who will most likely have conflicting personalities, because the viewers, including myself, seem to enjoy watching people argue. It's a somewhat sick idea, but very interesting. By the end of the three months, everyone cries and says they'll miss each other, and then the show airs a reunion the next week where the fighting begins again. What can be better?

My Wikipedia edit was just adding a sentence at the bottom of the first section entitled "History." The whole section was about how the show got its start and some recent information on some of the people who were on it and where they are now. Some former cast members are on TV shows, others have been in movies or have their own radio shows, and others have completely disappeared. However, I added that Tanya, who was a member of the cast of The Real World Chicage, actually just took part in an MTV show entitled "True Life; I'm a Reality TV Star." I didn't get to watch it, but I saw some advertisements and know people who did watch it. Tanya also hung out with many students from the University of Delaware last spring break. She seems to be keeping busy, as are many of the other cast members. It's funny how all they have to do is live life...we then watch it and they're instant stars. Interesting...

ps- loocsixela

TV Just Isn't the Same Anymore...

I just made another Wikipedia edit on the Reality Television site. In the "hoaxes" section, I added a few sentences about my personal favorite reality TV hoax, the "Average Joe" series. This was the first of it's kind. It came out during the time when The Bachelor had gained a huge amount of popularity. People, usually women, sat around their living rooms each week to see who would "fall in love." It's funny that it is still so popular, given that only two of the couples since 2002 have actually stayed together. However, each season we watch in hope that it will form a lasting relationship.

The Average Joe series, though, took quite a different approach. It took bachelor, Evan Marriott, who was just an average construction worker, and made it seem as though he was a millionaire for the purpose of the show. They dressed him up, placed him in a foreign castle, and he took the girls on fancy dates. The purpose of the show was more for an experimental purpose rather than for entertainment, even though it served both purposes well. We, as the public, wanted to know if the girls, who "fell in love" with this man, would stay with him after they found out he was not a millionaire. At the end, Zora Andrich, said she would definately still stay with him even though he was not rich. Once she said yes, they were both presented with a million dollars. They split up soon after.

As for me, I would not stay with him. These girls were absolutely humiliated on national television, and made out to be sleezy and insecure. If I was lied to like that, I would not be able to have a relationship with the person who placed me in the awkward position. However, a half a million dollars might make me forget, even if I wouldn't forgive. So I guess that was the purpose of the experiment then? Hmmm...

ps- loocsixela

My First Jessica Simpson Wikipedia Edit

I edited the Jessica Simpson page on Wikipedia today, to reflect some interesting news I recently heard on the radio. It was to my surprise that so quickly after her very public break-up with "Newlyweds" costar and former husband, Nick Lachey, she was said to have been somewhat involved with actor and comedian Dane Cook. This normally would not be such an issue, except for the fact that Dane Cook has been in a serious relationship for years. And supposedly when his other found out about this, she flew to the set and has not left since. Now, news is released on a daily basis about Jessica Simpson. When I hear it through the public media, I have to sit and think if it is seriously true or not, which is one of the problems with this medium. However, I have heard from other, more reliabe, sources that this has been the case with Jessica Simpson on the set of her last movie as well, which makes me believe that this case might be true as well.

I personally am interested that this happened because I recently became a huge Dane Cook fan after he appeared for a show at The University of Delaware. He was absolutely amazing, and I have been devoted to his work since. I hope that this little "rumor" does not affect their careers or personal relationships. However, when in the spotlight, one should be careful what they do and how they act, because it is bound to get out to people like me who will post it in a blog. Woops!

ps- loocsixela

Much to Say About Podcasting

Recently, in an article on Click Z Stats entitled "Forrester: Few Have Ever Heard of a Podcast", author Zachary Rodgers points out some very interesting facts and statistics. In his first paragraph, he states "The growth of podcasting has so far fallen short of its great expectations, with only one percent of connected North Americans using them on a regular basis according to a new Forrester Research report. More dismal for the nascent medium, about 73 percent of people say they've never heard of podcasting and don't care to learn more about it."
This is bad news for those trying to make it in the podcasting business, and surprising to those who believed it would be a hit right from the start. What is needed in order to foster growth is a stronger sound quality first, and must become "easier for marketers to measure and for listeners to manage." I am still a little bit in the dark, but I personally think that I'll become more knowledgeable as time passes, the product image grows, and it becomes more of a staple in everyday life. It is bound to grow quickly, just as blogs themselves did, but I think it just needs a little bit more time to develop. I didn't even know what it was until I took this technology course. I also think that once other mediums start gaining popularity, such as broadcasts for radios and shows, for example, audio blogging will gain popularity as well. It's my theory, so lets see if I'm right in the upcoming months and years!

PS - loocsixela

Loocsixela

This week in class we decided to blog the word, loocsixela. The purpose of this experiment is to give this "fake" word a good ranking. I linked it to the Green Bay Packers website, and hopefully after entering this word into a search on google, the Packers websites will come up. Putting it in another way, this made up word will gain "google juice." My purpose is to hopefully, somehow, mention this word in all of my blogs in the upcoming months and have the best ranking at the end of the semester. This will give me extra credit, and a good lesson on keywords and search engines. On the interesting facts portion, I added that in addition to HBO being started in Wilkes-Barre, so was Planters Peanuts!!! Italian immigrant Amedo Obici, along with his partner Mario Peruzzi, opened up the 100 year old business in 1906. Although it is a vacant building with Mr. Peanut still along the side of the brick, it is still our little memory of the big company that began there.

On the Planters Peanuts Website, there is a great deal of information about the company, as well as a timeline of events. I'll highlight a few of the major dates listed on the website.

1906-Obici founded Planters Peanuts Corporation in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
1913-"Obici built his first mass processing plant in Suffolk, VA"
1924-"Planters opened its first international offic in Toronto, Canada"
1930-"Planters stores opened in cities across the country"
1961-"Standard Brands, Inc. acquired the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company"
1981-"Standard Brands merged with Nabisco to form Nabisco Brands"
2000-"The family of Nabisco Brands was integrated into the Kraft Foods business
worldwide"
2006-"Planters celebrates 100 years of fresh taste!"

It is sad because most people who live in Wilkes-Barre are unaware that this building even exists! It is in an old and rundown part of the city, even though most of it seems pretty rundown these days.

But I am hoping that by editing these Wikipedia articles, locals will realize the value this valley holds. This is an attempt to get alumni from around the country more involved in the support of BU athletics, even if they are unable to attend the games.

The games will be available about 1 hour after they air, and will be about a 3-4 minutes download (they will get longer as time passes). This is a great way for the university to stronhold the new technology available. In my opinion, BU is ahead of the game, and most universities will offer this feature within the next few years.

In conjunction with downloading games on iTunes, I also recently heard in a lecture that many universities have been doing the same thing with class lectures. I looked this up on a Google Blogsearch, and found that Harvard Medical School is just one such example.

This blog, based on Harvard Podcasting, was about how the students' lectures would be available to download on iTunes. I think that this is a great idea! However, I personally only like the idea if students are given iPods through the university. I realize that so many people have them to begin with, but personally, I don't. I got one for my birthday, but my old computer only has Windows 98 (which I'm happy with, by the way). So I returned it. But if I was told that, on top of out-of-state tuition, I ALSO had to get an iPod...well, my parents would not be too happy with that.

This is actually exactly what is happening at Duke University for next fall. Duke is actually providing iPods to the 1,650 incoming freshman, and 150 will be given to the teaching staff. This is in an effort to add a more technological aspect to classes, and give the lectures a little spunk. I think it's an amazing idea, and I won't be surprised if they have something similar to the BU athletic program as well. Duke's basketball team isn't too shabby! But we'll see how they pan out in the rest of the NCAA Tournament!

Online Dating...Too Good to Be True???

I recently read Scott Golden's blog posting about online dating - Scott's Blog. I have already been rather interested in this trend that's picking up popularity, and his article got me thinking about it even more. There are so many sites offered now for online dating, and for many of them, it's working!
Last semester, one of my friends here at the University of Delaware told me that she met her boyfriend on the popular site, My Space. Me, being the pessimist that didn't believe in online dating, never thought it would last. However, they're still together and going strong. This made me rethink a little bit, but I still was NOT a believer.
Then, a few weeks ago, one of my best friends from home told me that she has been dating someone for about a month that she met on the popular dating site, JDate, which is a dating service for people who are Jewish. This definately made me more of a believer. When I mentioned it to Scott, he actually told me that his friend from home recently got married to someone she met on JDate, and I've heard of two more cases since then.
Well, I am definately sold! Plus, there are so many other sites for online dating. They are taking over the internet. I know that one very popular site among the Wilkes-Barre crowd (my hometown), is EHarmony.
Even though I cannot see myself joining one, especially at this particular time, it is not something I would rule out for the future. So many people are finding happiness, and I can openly and honestly say, that I think it's a great idea! Date Away!

The New Trend in Media: RSS and Podcasting!

We had a speaker today, named Dana VanDen Heuvel. He is direct of business developement of Pheedo, Inc. This is an RSS and Weblog Advertising Network. His lecture, about some of the latest trends in marketing, was extremely interesting. He highlighted some of the basic benefits of RSS: (1)RSS is completely opt-in, meaning people need to subscribe to it, usually on such an item as an aggregator. (2) It is completely consumer controlled, meaning that the consumers are the people who sign up for the information. This is usually because they are very intrested in what they are signing up for, and it is easier for them to manage the information this way. (3) It's becoming an effective advertising channel (4) Most importantly***It's CONVENIENT!!! The information gets "pushed" to consumers, rather than the consumer going to each individual site, which could take quite a bit of time, and can be annoying if they go to the site and there isn't any new information. Also, RSS allows for people to save articles that they cannot read at the moment, for later.RSS is the fastest growing internet channel, and I personally like it because it is completely SPAM free!
Podcasting is part of this new scheme, and gives marketers the ability to center attention on the people that matter. People are becoming more selective in the media/news they listen to, so podcasting is a way to meet customers in the media that they choose to participate in. One major player in podcasting is Purina, who VanDen Hevel described as completely "altruistic." They aren't podcasting because it's the "cool" thing to do, but because customers want it. Their podcasting network has nothing to do with selling, it just simply gives information that people can use.
This is all in the very early stages, and is expecting to grow a great deal more in the very near future. He stated this site as being very popular in the new industry: Podshow.com. I hope I can learn how to podcast over my spring break, how fun would that be!?!

Universal McCann

I thought this article was interesting because my sister works at Universal McCann. He was telling us about word of mouth over the internet, and how quickly word can travel. He used the example of a site called Don't Date Him, Girl. So I figured I would check it out. This site is HILLARIOUS!!! Boys, you better be on your best behavior, because you definately don't want to end up on this site. It is based around postings of ex-girlfriends who don't like the guys they dated, for some reason, and they post their name and tell everyone in the world not to date him! Wow, way to make sure they never date again. It is the exact same thing that Battelle was writing about in "The Search." People have access to private information through the "database of intentions," and privacy is becoming more and more of an issue as more information is becoming public knowledge. I feel badly for the members of the CIA whose whereabouts are no longer secret information.

My Very Own Vanity Search!

According to "The Search," by John Battelle, it is important for a person to do a vanity search, which means to type their own name into google, and see what comes up. This is because the search is an easy means for anyone to find out information about you, and you should know what information is out there and available for anyone in the public to see!
When doing my vanity search, nothing interesting came up...which I guess is a good thing. It had a few sites from local newspapers about some of my achievements in high school, and a "members" page from my sorority: Alpha Phi!. However, after learning how to make the page, and actually putting all of the information in, I found that a page already exists. This was frustrating at first, but after reading the other page, I realized that there is so much great information already on it.
The reason for the mixup is because Joseph Murgas was his english name, but Josef or Jozef Murgas is his Slovakian name. Therefore, when I was editing the The Wilkes-Barre site on Wikipedia, I realized that it used his English, rather than Slovakian name. I edited the Wilkes-Barre site, though, and changed the spelling of his name, and added Jozef Murgas. This way, if anyone visits the Wilkes-Barre wiki, and see's Joseph Murgas's name, they can click on the link and learn all about him!
Basically, here's an EXTREMELY brief outline of his story, but I would highly suggest reading the wiki site, or going to Joseph Murgas: The Forgotten Genius, which is a site I helped create and work on in high school. Joseph was born in Tajov, Slovakia in 1864. During his studies in Slovakia, he found an important article in a Slovakian about a need for a Slovak-speaking priest to administer a newly founded parish in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania.
He moved to Wilkes-Barre, my hometown, in 1896, where he began his life's work as a priest, with a strong passion on the side for science and art. By day he was a priest, and by night he was a scientist in the basement of the parish, which he turned into a laboratory. He was strongly involved with theories of electricity and wireless transmission. His rival, Guglielmo Marconi was advancing somewhat slower than Murgas, and his wireless transmission system could only transmit messages over short distances of water.
Murgas, however, had two towers built in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, a distance of 30 miles. And in 1907, the first human voice was transmitted over that distance, making his progress the most advanced at that time.
However, tragedy soon struck. Murgas became ill, and one of the towers in Scranton caught on fire. He felt too weak to continue, but did not want his patents to be lost if he died. Someone needed to continue the research. So one day, Murgas met with Guglielmo Marconi at the Murray Complex in Wilkes-Barre, where he gave Marconi his life's work. Marconi went on "finish" the invention of what we today know as the radio, and Murgas passed away on May 11, 1929, having never received any recognition for the invention. If you look up any information about the invention of the radio, Marconi's name is sure to be next to it.
Joseph's murgas kind and selfless act benefited our lives more than anyone realizes. He is a truly inspiring man, and one of my biggest role models in life. Even if I can share his story over a blog, there's a possibility that someone may read it and be affected by him too. That makes it worth while enough for me.

Ohhh Wilkes-Barre...Gotta Love It.

I am still new at this and just trying things out, but I just edited my first Wikipedia article on Wilkes-Barre, PA. I added a local attraction that was not previously there, and if you do not view the Wyoming Valley Mall as a local attraction, you have OBVIOUSLY never been to Wilkes-Barre. I even debated adding in the local Barnes and Noble, given that those are the only two options of something decent to do in the entire valley on a Saturday night. humph.

D. I am hoping that by the end of this semester, I become really great at creating and updating my blog, as well as editing my Wiki articles. It seems like a lot of fun, and very appropriate, given that I have already learned about blogs in general in my introductory Marketing class. This is all in hopes of getting an A in my Information Technology Applications in Marketing (My favourite Class) class!!!
